What happens on the first visit?
On your first visit, you will fill out a patient history form which will be reviewed by Dr. Bernat. Next, she will perform an assessment in order to make a diagnosis. This diagnosis and a course of action to correct the issues at hand will be communicated to you. As long as there are no indications to postpone treatment (ie. recent trauma would indicate a need for x-rays or further testing to make sure chiropractic care is warranted), Dr. Bernat will treat you in that same visit.
How long do appointments take?
An initial visit will take 45 minutes. Treatments thereafter are booked in 15 minute increments. During a treatment visit, Dr. Bernat will utilize soft tissue therapy, adjust the spine and provide any direction if stretching or exercises are indicated.
What happens when you get adjusted?
Chiropractors are trained to find areas where tissues and joints are irritated and restricted from moving freely. Your body is positioned comfortably and Dr. Bernat will use either her hands or adjusting tools in order to alleviate these restrictions. You may hear a noise, which many describe as a "cracking" sound. This is a sound that is made when a gas bubble escapes as the joint is being moved. Many patients feel immediate relief after a treatment.
I am pregnant. Can I be adjusted?
Absolutely! Dr. Bernat has treated many women through all stages of their pregnancies. She is able to modify techniques and utilizes special tools in order to gently and safely treat Mom-to-be without placing any stress on the baby. Common pregnancy ailments include: low back pain, sciatica, mid back pain, headaches, rib pain, pelvic pain, foot pain. Also, Dr. Bernat performs the Webster Technique, which is utilized if baby is not in the optimal position (head down) for birth.
Do you treat newborns and infants?
The birthing process can be a traumatic one and certain conditions may arise from the pressure and twisting that is experienced by baby. A few common complaints treated in these little ones include: torticollis (baby favours neck turned to one side), colic (gas), constipation. When treating a newborn/infant, the adjustment consists of placing a small amount of pressure to joints and tissues. There is no forceful bending and twisting.
Do I need a referral to see a Chiropractor?
No. Chiropractors are "primary contact" health care providers who are trained to accurately diagnose your condition and determine a treatment plan. However, most insurance companies do require a referral from a family doctor for custom made orthotics.
